Plane Missing Westchester County Airport
A search is ongoing Thursday night in the area around Westchester County Airport for a single-engine plane that lost radio contact with the airport and went off the radar around 5:30 p.m., police said.
According to Kieran O’Leary, spokesman for the county police, the plane, which is a Beechcraft Bonanza BE36, took off from John F. Kennedy International Airport at 4:58 p.m. Its initial destination was Cuyahoga County Airport in Richmond Heights, Ohio. The pilot, who is male, reported to JFK Airport that he had a warning light for low oil pressure at 5:25 p.m. and JFK’s command advised him to go to Westchester County Airport.
Westchester County Airport lost contact with him at 5:30 p.m. and the plane disappeared from radar.
The New York City Department of Environmental Protection was also involved in the rescue because Rye Lake is a city reservoir. Connecticut authorities were also notified, O’Leary said.
Missing Plane Westchester Airport
At least two people were on the missing plane, county spokesperson Catherine Cioffi said. Cioffi added search and rescue efforts began at 5:38 p.m.
O’Leary said the search began in the area of the airport and over the Connecticut border into Greenwich. Dive teams are being staged due to the airport’s proximity to Rye Lake and the reservoir. Rescue began immediately with airport operations, Westchester County Police and the Department of Emergency Services in addition to multiple area fire departments.
Because Thursday’s weather was rainy and it was after sunset and the area around the airport is heavily wooded, O’Leary said, foot searches were also ongoing and drones from various agencies were being deployed.
“The best words for it at the moment is it’s an ongoing search to see if this aircraft can be located,” O’Leary said.
